Remembering Steve Garfinkel
Steve Garfinkel, A true friend and mentor of Theory Films, passed away suddenly last month in New York City. His guidance and advice were cherished and heeded. His loyalty, encouragement, and friendship will never be forgotten.
From his obituary,
Steve Garfinkel, resident of New York City, passed away on Tuesday, August 18th, 2009 in his Upper West Side apartment.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Mr. Garfinkel grew up in the suburbs, the son of a prominent Radiologist father and concert-pianist mother. He borrowed the family movie 8mm camera at the age of nine, bought an ancient Bolex at thirteen and worked in film ever since. Mr. Garfinkel spent years with NBC Television News, Showtime Network, both in Post-Production and Broadcast Engineering,
Mr. Garfinkel was best known for his 14-year tenure at Eastman Kodak Company, serving as Eastern regional manager for the company's Entertainment Imaging Division. His sudden passing was felt by the many people in the industry whose lives he touched. At Kodak he was a champion of film students, generously offering support and guidance to all those needing a helping hand.
Mr. Garfinkel had recently begun a new chapter in his career when he joined PostWorks, New York, as director of cinematography services. Mr. Garfinkel was also a cinematographer and accomplished photographer, a member of IATSE Local 600, and an associate member of the American Society of Cinematographers.
Mr. Garfinkel's published photo credits include six record covers for pianist Vladimir Horowitz of RCA Records and a plethora of "author photos" for contemporary writers.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
